Advanced Chiropractic: The Wonders of ABC
by Michael K. Olkjer, D.C.

Patients are amazed that they can look and feel so much better when so little force and effort is used.

Remember how your mom always told you to sit up straight because it was healthier? Well, she was partially on the right track. The reason we are encouraged to stand up straighter is because there is a long history of observation that people who stand up straight are healthier than others. However, this does not mean you can force yourself up straight and be healthier. Forcing yourself upright is not what is healthy. Having your body working well enough so that it stays upright without any effort is what is healthy.

A chiropractic technique called Advanced BioStructural Correction (ABC) helps individuals to return to the upright position and stay there without any effort; your body not only feels better, but functions better as well. In the upright position your heart and lungs work more efficiently and you stay healthier. The development of ABC, as taught by Dr. Jesse Jutkowitz, is one of the most exciting developments to happen to the chiropractic professional in recent years. ABC utilizes observation and understanding of the workings of live bodies and their responses to certain stresses to help the body stay upright.

Let’s consider four truths we know about our bodies:

First, the body is a partially self-correcting mechanism. Clearly, the body is not totally self-correcting or you would never need a doctor. For example, cut your finger and it will heal. Cut your finger off and it will not grow back.

Next, to get a body healthy and working properly, we adjust only the things the body cannot self-correct, allowing the body to do the rest (such as healing that cut finger).

Third, is that there are some things the body cannot self-correct (re-grow a new finger).

Fourth, is that we should never adjust anything the body can correct but is not correcting. Why? Because the body knows what needs to be corrected. The beautiful thing about ABC is that doctors are able to find the areas that need to be corrected and leave alone the other areas (because they do not need to be corrected at that time, even though the patient may feel pain there). ABC doctors adjust according to what each individual body needs, at that particular time, to heal and unwind through past trauma. The body will then let the past trauma go and the pain will disappear.

Knowing those four truths about our bodies allows us to find what they cannot self-correct. You may be surprised to learn that spinal bones go out of position in directions the body cannot self-correct because there are no muscles that pull in the direction needed to get those bones back into their proper position.

Picture a spine with a fishing reel at the neck—the fishing line goes down your back, with the hook at the bottom. When bones go out of place in a direction you can't self﷓correct, the body gets stuck forward. The meninges (the covering surrounding the brain and spinal cord) then tighten up, reeling in the fishing reel. The problem is thus not just the pulling on the nerves and brain stem, but that this tension locks the spine forward in stress physiology.

In other words, this is a position the body can’t correct itself because there are no muscles pulling in the direction(s) needed for correction. The only thing that one can do is compensate. When we compensate to that, we eventually compensate to the next thing and so on. Before long, we've compensated dozens to hundreds of times to an original injury that the body could not correct itself.

In short, we cannot heal from stress physiology. Just look at all those people trying to correct posture (their own and others) and not accomplishing it! All healing happens from ease. It's impossible to heal from stress. If the body can't fix itself, it compensates for stress by shifting pressure to something that can take it but never heals, just compensates.

When adjusted with ABC, the body immediately straightens without effort by the patient. The body also immediately begins a process of unwinding. The body unwinds out of every injury, accident, trauma, and emotional upset it’s ever had. In my experience, the only things ABC hasn't been able to help are infections, fractures, cancer and such. Everything else improves immediately.

Immediate Results
For ABC patients, results are fast and profound. In fact, many ABC doctors find the results so reliable and fast they are often amazed themselves. ABC doctors frequently see patients with problems after they have been to many traditional and holistic practitioners, of varying techniques, with few or no results. These patients get improvement in a matter of visits—often the very first one.

So, how do we know the body is unwinding through old injuries? Extensive pre- and post- sitting and standing full spine films by Dr. Jutkowitz and other doctors show it by measurement. With ABC, we have a system that clearly shows when to adjust and when to leave it alone. This is much more effective than exercises and traction, and makes the changes without the use of either.

ABC is also an incredibly gentle technique. Patients are amazed that they can look and feel so much better when so little force and effort is used. ABC also reveals an end point at which the spine completes its unwinding process. At that point, patients can pursue wellness care. They learn from their ABC doctor which activities cause the body to be pushed forward and can choose to avoid those before compensations (pain) are established. As our bodies stay upright and healthy, we can do the things we want to do without worries of pain.

If you are suffering from a condition that has not been resolved, realize that it has taken years to damage your body to where you are today. ABC can help with immediate relief and long-term correction. Just as dental braces take 18 months or more (with 24 hours a day contact) to straighten, your spine will also take time. There are no unrealistic health goals with ABC—only unrealistic time frames. Though you may not be healed with one visit, you will see a huge change in the way you look and feel on the very first visit.

Patients choose to make ABC part of their lifestyle because of the quality of life benefits they experience, including better breathing, posture, sleep and relaxation; less pain and stress; more energy; and feeling happier—just to name a few.

Can Chiropractic Care Help Your Child?
by Robert Wheeler

When I went to Chiropractic College, my family and I had already benefited from chiropractic adjustments for several years. Chiropractic had helped us with various back pains, headaches and similar conditions. I also noted that after being under regular chiropractic care, I did not get sick as often. It wasn't until I went to school to become a Chiropractor that I learned children could benefit from chiropractic adjustments as well.

My daughter Brenna was my first experience with the benefits of chiropractic care for children. She was only a few months old when she became very ill. Medical drug treatments were not working. Examination revealed a misaligned bone in her neck. A gentle adjustment corrected the misalignment and all of her symptoms were gone by the next day.

My son Evan could not turn his head to the left as a small infant. You could lay him on his back and call him from the right and he could turn his head to look at you. Do the same on the left, however, and he could not budge his little head past directly overhead. If I tried to turn his head left for him, his whole body would roll that direction. Evan also had a misalignment in his neck, probably from birth trauma. Two adjustments allowed him to turn his head normally.

I have worked on a 5-year-old girl with Cerebral Palsy who had severe muscle spasms. She was in diapers, confined to a wheelchair, and could not speak. Over the course of 18 months of treatments, her muscle spasms were reduced and were periodically absent. She was able to only wear her diaper at night. Eventually, she could sit for brief periods on my exam table and even learned to tiptoe around while I held her hand. She began to say simple words, including my name. Although she may never run and play like most children, she definitely benefited from her chiropractic care.

I have had success working with children for back and neck pain, headaches and scoliosis. I have seen improvements in coordination, with chronic earaches and a number of other conditions that frequent childhood. The exam on smaller children is modified based on their size and inability to speak. X-rays may not be necessary when caring for children depending on the chiropractic technique being used and the condition that is being addressed.

Children tend to heal faster than adults. This results in shorter recovery times and fewer doctor visits. Children more often than their parents come in for their checkup only to test "clear," meaning that they do not need an adjustment that day.

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association continues to study the benefits of chiropractic care for children. Whether your child was involved in a car wreck, born with a disability, wakes up with a stiff neck or is under a wellness lifestyle, a chiropractor is an essential part of their healthcare team.

Relieve Low Back Pain During Pregnancy
by Jennifer Waldroup

It’s often the little things that you do throughout the day that can contribute to pain and discomfort--or health and relaxation.

Pregnancy and childbirth is one of the most amazing things that can happen in a woman’s lifetime. When your child begins the growing process and your body begins to change to accommodate that growth, low back pain may occur. That can take away from the joy and excitement that you should experience. As a doctor of chiropractic and a mother, I would like to share some ways to eliminate or manage low back pain during this awesome event.

Why is there low back pain during pregnancy?

Hormones

When a woman becomes pregnant, her body will begin to go through many different changes. One of those changes is hormonal. Relaxin is one of the hormones that will increase during pregnancy. Relaxin allows the ligaments to "relax" and soften so that the pelvis can spread to accommodate the baby. While doing its job, however, the relaxin can also allow bones to move and shift in the wrong direction, thus causing impingement on the nerves that exit the spinal canal. This can cause irritation to the tissues around, above and below that area.

Intrauterine Constraint

The shifting that occurs from relaxin release can also be one factor that contributes to intrauterine constraint. This is a condition that obstructs normal movement of the fetus during development and can prevent the fetus from attaining a head down vertex position. The obstruction is caused by a subluxation (misalignment) of the pelvic bones. There are several ligaments that help to anchor the uterus to the frame of the body. When the bones move out of place, torsion (twisting and pulling) occurs on the ligaments. This can actually decrease the space that the fetus has to move and flip around. Breech babies can result from intrauterine constraint.

Poor Posture

During pregnancy it is also important to take a look at posture and lifestyle habits. Sitting slumped over a computer or slouched in front of the television for extended amounts of time will contribute to spinal misalignment. Kicking back in a recliner chair puts the body in a "V" position which cramps the baby’s space and can cause subluxation of the spine and pelvis. Lifting and moving things improperly can also cause an inflamed low back, as can sleeping on couches, futons and waterbeds. These are just a few examples of poor posture habits that can contribute to low back pain, especially during pregnancy.

Weight Gain

Another thought to consider is the additional weight that a woman will be gaining as her baby grows inside. Don’t get me wrong, it is necessary to gain some extra weight during pregnancy. However, this additional weight pulls the center of gravity forward, forcing the low back to accommodate for the extra weight.

Stress and Other Factors

Lastly, let’s not forget the stress factor. Stress is considered one of the major contributing factors for 75% of all diseases! High amounts of stress can raise blood pressure and decrease oxygen flow to the baby. Sometimes a preexisting condition such as trauma, illness or surgery, can cause an onset of low back pain during pregnancy. Bone misalignment along with poor posture, bad ergonomics and excessive weight gain can cause long lasting low back pain and problems during pregnancy. When stress is added to the mix, it may seem impossible to pinpoint the problem.

How can we manage low back pain during pregnancy?

Now that we have considered what might be contributing to low back pain during pregnancy, let’s take a look at options for management of that pain. Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind:

Posture

Keeping your spine and pelvis aligned using chiropractic adjustments are, in my opinion, the best way to manage low back pain. During pregnancy it is especially important to keep the bones of the pelvis aligned correctly, not only to manage low back pain but also to help prevent intrauterine constraint. If your baby is already in a breech position, the Webster Technique is a safe, gentle chiropractic method of detecting and correcting the bones that are involved in the intrauterine constraint.

Massage

Massage therapy is a great way to release muscle tension and stress. Gentle massage techniques will also help promote increased circulation and combat fatigue.

Exercise

Exercise is important in promoting a healthy pregnancy. Movement keeps the blood flowing and keeps the joints lubricated. Yoga, swimming, walking and pre/post natal exercise classes will help to control low back pain during pregnancy. Exercise and a well balanced diet will also help to prevent excessive weight gain in pregnancy.

Here are a few additional things to consider about posture and daily activities.

bulletAvoid wearing high heels. Wearing heels greatly changes the center of gravity and
puts more strain on your low back.
bulletSleep on your left side with pillows between your legs and just below the belly.
The fetus needs some support so the weight of your belly doesn’t pull your spine out of alignment while side sleeping.
bulletSquat down to pick something up verses bending over. If something is awkward
or too heavy to pick up, ask for assistance.
bulletGet plenty of rest. Elevating your feet will help to release some strain on your
back and will to alleviate swollen feet and ankles.

What we know now…

It’s often the little things that you do throughout the day that can contribute to pain and discomfort--or health and relaxation. Paying attention to how you sit, stand, work, sleep and function in your daily activities will help keep low back pain under control. Keeping your spine aligned with regular visits to the chiropractor and using gentle massage therapy and exercise will greatly reduce your low back pain so that you can enjoy your pregnancy. Please remember to always talk with your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program.

You are the single most important thing that stands between your baby and the outside forces of this world. Do all that you can to nurture and protect that beautiful life growing inside you!
