The Dream is Catching On:
Free Clinic for Children's Health

by Michele Aitken

There is no greater gift than the gift of love, especially love given unconditionally by a child. I have had the wonderful opportunity over the last few years to watch time and again the love of children heal themselves and others with whom they come in contact. For years, I have had a dream of oneness, of many people working together for healing and wholeness. This is still my dream.

One of my favorite stories that my husband, Cary, tells is about my older daughter Kayla. I was at work while Cary was at home with the girls. Kayla had fallen down and scraped her knee. She came in crying and pleaded with Cary to “fix it!” Being the dutiful father, Cary cleaned the wound, put on an antibiotic cream and a band-aid. He gave Kayla a kiss and said, “There you go”, very proud of his first aid skills. But Kayla didn’t move. She sat with a pout on her face; her arms crossed, and began to cry again.

It was obvious she was very frustrated, which caused my husband to be frustrated. He asked what was wrong. Kayla asked,”You are not done, are you?” Cary looked bewildered. “Honey, what else do you need?” Now in complete frustration, Kayla put her hands on her hips and said, “Well aren’t you going to do energy on it or something?” Whenever there was a boo-boo, I always did polarity and healing on the area to take out the pain and calm down the central nervous system. Kayla didn’t know exactly what I did, but she did know that it worked!

I love this story because I want all children to have this education of whole healing. I want them and their families to know all the options to creating wellness in the body.

Of course, there is more to holistic healing than energy work. Many wonderful modalities can support the body in healing. My daughters know they have two doctors. One is a holistic chiropractor along with his therapists, and the other a loving and open-minded pediatrician. Both teams want what is best for my children and their bodies. As a parent, it is my responsibility to choose what my children need and who best can serve them. As an advocate for this type of holistic teamwork, I feel it is my responsibility to educate everyone with the opportunity of whole health and wellness.

With the help of Jackie Kosednar and many wonderful healers in our community, I am helping to put together a free children’s clinic for holistic health. We have been running this program for several months, and each time we are getting busier and having more success. It takes everybody’s hard work and dedication to create such a venture. I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of an entire team working together to make this happen.

What happens at our sessions? We begin with an assessment of each child and then hand pick the team of holistic practitioners that will support these children with health and healing. We have a diverse array of health challenges with these children, who range in age. Some families have never done anything out of conventional medicine, while others have supported holistic modalities for many years. No matter which background, all children walk out feeling better and loved!

In October 2002, we decided to open the clinic up to expectant mothers in addition to children. Holistic healing was a wonderful tool for me when I was pregnant, and I’m happy we can offer this to many moms-to-be.

As always, we need the support and dedication of all of you in our community to continue to make this clinic a success. Being caregivers, we all do some of our work for free or lowered costs for our clientele who don’t have insurance or who are struggling financially. We are grateful to Dr. Richard Newman for his generosity in letting us use his clinic on the second Saturday of every month. Others are now offering their clinics as well. Please come join us, and encourage anyone you know who needs more holistic work to come and visit the clinic.

The dream is catching on! Like everything of goodness in life, this project is growing wings of its own and becoming its own entity. I have great joy in my life for the love of children. In working with them, I am healed by their open, unconditional love and their desire for wellness of body, mind, and soul.

If you would like more information or care to support the clinic, please contact Michele at 563-2929 or 529-6921. You can also e-mail her at aitkenc@gci.net.

Calling All Angels
by Jackie Kosednar

Have you ever had a quest? It often begins with a vision and compels you to attain an impossible (yet possible) dream. The paradox is a sure sign that a quest is spiritual in nature. Spiritual writers claim that everyone has a purpose or contribution to make. I know my purpose is to fulfill my quest and the vision that came with it. To do this, I need your help.

Children have always been a large part of my life and very special to my heart. Fifteen years ago, I took on the quest to find a cure for my twelve-year-old son’s cancer. Many of you who know me personally or have read my book, One Miracle After Another, know that we found the cure for his cancer. That’s how and why this magazine began.

When I completed the quest to find the cure for cancer, I opened to a larger vision and a new quest. The Healing Toby Network is the vehicle through which this larger vision will come to be. Many of you are destined to be a part of it and the larger purpose we all carry: to create a new health care system that not only cures disease but prevents a large portion of that disease. We know alternative/holistic health is God’s answer to health care problems. The movement is growing and spreading all over the world, with Europe leading in the discovery and development of health technology.

Holistic Health is the new paradigm for the new century. I believe it will very soon be an accepted and mandatory part of our own health care system. Medical doctors will understand the healing arts and be treatment planners rather than drug pushers. Our souls are organic; we have to stop putting chemicals into our bodies and our children’s bodies.

The world is involved in intense change now. Thought is changing and evolving rapidly. We can all feel that. We stand on the brink of war and ask which side will win. Do we wish to go back to our primitive ways of war on each other, or are we ready to open to the new paradigm of co-operation and peace on Earth? Can you hear the Call?

Despite the potential of world war, I believe more and more people are choosing to act from love and peace. God placed a quest inside each of us to seek our spirituality. Millions of people all over the world are answering the Call and seeking God. The quest for God, spirituality, peace and love will lead us to the solutions we need to create a future worth living. The new future is already happening.

Those of us around the world who pray for peace and to live and let live, who walk and talk our spirituality, are uniting and forwarding the quest for world peace. We are the angels; we work to walk in the light; we are dedicated to what’s right, and we are the healers. We are the forerunners of a new health care system that is gentle and peaceful, and we are healing ourselves in the process of healing others. Is there a healer inside of you? Many of us are not professionals; still we work to educate our family, our friends, and ourselves. We are bringing in that future. You can help. Now is the time to stand up and be counted. We are making a difference.

Everyone who works for the Healing Toby Network -- from board members and staff to web designers – is a healer. As a community of healers, we have developed Children’s Healing Day – monthly free holistic health care clinics for children and pregnant women. We ask families to donate $20 if they are able. The children are seen by a variety of health care professionals doing many different modalities of healing, addressing each child’s unique problems and concerns. Our goals are to prevent medical trauma and disease in children and document the power of holistic/alternative health care for children. For those with severe health problems, we work to support and facilitate healing in conjunction with medical protocols. Through this effort, we raise the quality of life and health for Alaskan Children. Our children are our future, and so is holistic health care.

Children’s Healing Day is gaining power and growing rapidly. If you feel the call, or have a healer in your soul – if children are close to your heart, you can help us. We need more body workers, chiropractors, naturopathic doctors and medical holistic doctors to volunteer at least four hours of work once a month. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about children’s health care. If you are already experienced in children’s health care, we need educators and educational materials put together. We also need volunteers to assist in the production, marketing and recordkeeping.

If you cannot donate your work or time or assist us financially, you can pray with us and for us. Alone or in your prayer groups and gatherings, you can pray for the success of the Healing Toby Network, and for the healing of all children everywhere. You can buy a copy of One Miracle After Another and give it to a sick friend or donate it back to the network so we can give it to families with ill children. One-half of the proceeds from this book go to support the Network. Thank you for helping us make a difference, for raising the quality of life for Alaskan children and for demonstrating the power of alternative and holistic health care.

Please call Lori Montgomery at 243-1420 or 243-9533 to get on the Body Worker schedule, to volunteer, or to attend our next board meeting.

Honoring the Power of Family
by Jackie Kosednar

The divine idea and pattern of 'family' is one of the most
sacred things on this planet.

Families have been getting a bad rap for awhile now. Too many people complain about the dysfunctional family they grew up in or continue to live in. But the truth is that it's tough to raise a strong family in any age. Maybe it is time we stop complaining and see how we can help instead. Wouldn’t it be great to have Parenting 101 and human relationship classes as part of the standard curriculum in high school?

Those of us who have worked for our mental health and personal growth often find that when we clear the pain and trauma of childhood from our psyche, we come to love our family of origin members unconditionally. Forgiveness always benefits us. We may not like certain behavior still, but the emotional charge is gone, the wounds are healed. Without hate, we can notice that our families did nurture us at least enough to survive and we can raise ourselves up the rest of the way. When our own parents let us down, life brought other caretakers into our lives as mentors and role models to help. It takes life energy to harbor and maintain hate. That life energy could be better put to use creating health!

If all would honor the idea of family – by loving our family unconditionally and putting family first – life would be very good indeed. It would be good for individuals as well as for our society at large.

The idea of family takes many forms. There is our family of origin – the one we grew up in – and there is our spiritual family. Friendships form extended families that make our communities. In the workplace, family patterns also develop. The divine idea and pattern of 'family' is one of the most sacred things on this planet. It is the nest we nurture in and the place we find our safety.

Family is the backbone of all societies. We are only as strong and healthy as our family at large because that's where human beings are produced. Societies that value and honor their children, grow, prosper and have less crime. Throughout human history, societies and countries that didn't honor their families and work to strengthen them often perished. It seems our world has been on the brink of downfall for awhile. Maybe if we all started thinking about producing the kind of world that would make healthy children instead of healthy pocketbooks we would begin to see a new trend.

To make us spiritually strong, we need to serve others. In spiritual service the greatest work we can do is strengthen the family and the idea of family. All parents are in spiritual service to their children. We can work to make the world a great place for kids through our products, businesses and churches. We can give money to educate children and make them better human beings. We can leave a legacy for future generations by nurturing all children and helping families. Anyone can be a support person to his or her friend's families. In this way, we honor God by honoring his main life creation, the family.

In spiritual service to children, the health community of Alaska and the Healing Toby Network produced 'The Kid's Clinic,' a free alternative health care clinic for children and pregnant women every month in Anchorage, from fall through spring. One of the Network’s goals is to strengthen Alaskan society by helping to strengthen and heal our children. Volunteer health care providers and body workers come together with this thought in mind. We realize that the physical health of children is very important because these are the future parents of future generations. To make a healthy world we have to make our children healthier. There is tremendous satisfaction knowing that we are helping these kids be disease free their whole lives by solving many problems before they can onset. This kind of service blesses our lives in countless ways.

What else can we do to make this world a better place?

bulletEveryone can make a contribution to God, the planet and society. Learn to give time, voting power and money to help and strengthen the American family.
bulletBe a safe person. Never abuse a child with word or deed, or look the other way when you know someone else is.
bulletGive your children and other family members your top priority.
bulletFamily rituals and routine help create security and stability for family members. As a family of 2 or 10, take time to create rituals and celebrate them.
bulletUse your political influences to help families.
bulletVolunteer time, energy and money to non-profit agencies created to increase the quality of life for our children and the future.
bulletBe kind and caring to your grandchildren, nieces and nephews, giving words of praise, encouragement and love and seeing to their financial needs. Nurture and love all your child relatives and the children of your friends.
bulletGive to any family in need.
bulletBe tolerant and loving to fussy children in public. All children need attention. You can help parents by talking with them, and paying attention to and playing with their children.
bulletIf you know a single Mom or Dad, help them clean their house. An extra hand is always helpful to any family.

These are only a few ways to help the world, God and country by honoring children and families. As this mission unfolds in your life, more and more creative ways to serve open up to you and your life becomes very rewarding and blessed.

What's So Great About The Holistic Kid's Clinic?
Twelve Kids Explain...

I learned your body has batteries, electricity and switches. I learned this from Dr. Newman. He put a battery on my jaw. I wasn’t even, but when he put the battery on my jaw, I was even. It did not hurt. It was fun. Another time, Michele did craniosacral on me. She put her hands on my head. She felt the blood rushing up my spine and in my head. She held it and then she rocked it back and forth a little. It’s relaxing. I liked it.
~Alyeska, age 9

It’s great!!! I came into the clinic feeling sick, tired and tense, but when they had all worked on me and by the time they were done, I felt all relaxed and full of energy. It was a great feeling! I love this place!
P.S. The people are great fun and friendly!
~Alisha, age 14

I like all the doctors, especially Audrey and Ty. I would like to thank everyone, like Lorrie.
~Veronica, age 9

I learned how to kiss a moose standing on one toe while swimming in hair jell, plus eating cake with a fox.
~Jordan, age 11

Oh my goodness, what an improvement! When I got my back adjusted, I felt like a feather. My posture has improved a great deal. I have also learned a lot more about my body. I would recommend this place to anyone. Thanks!
~Sarah-Joy, age 14

I like coming here because they make me feel comfortable and I love the back massages. We come here about every month and made me more flexible from popping bones.
~Christina, age 11

One thing I like to say is that they help me clear my asthma symptoms. Thank you.
~Brenhon, age 10

It helps me with growing pains and injuries. The people are nice.
~Cyle, age 13

This is a great and wonderful place. It’s helped me with my problem. I have been cleared for allergies and other things. I’m very thankful for Kid’s Clinic.
~Emily, age 10

Before I started coming to the Kid’s Clinic, I spent a lot of time sick from different flu and colds. Also, several years ago I fractured my ankle and a couple years after I fell and hurt my knee. I limped a lot because my ankle was so weak that I sprained it a lot. Since coming to the clinic, I have been sick less and my leg has gotten a lot stronger. After a couple months, I was able to run for the first time in years.
~Leana, age 14

Since I started Kid’s Clinic, I’ve had less overall exhaustion. I’ve been able to do more exercising. Most recently I went biking, and made fairly good time on the trip. Usually after such an excursion, I would be exhausted. The Kid’s Clinic allowed me to do exercises such as this because I was no longer spending my energy trying to recover from various pains such as vertebrae out of place and overall tension.
~Cory, age 16

I think more kids should come to this clinic, because it really helps us. Some kids are afraid of doctors so they don’t want to come, but you should. I went into lots of treatments and learned what is good and bad for me. So now I can stay healthy. The “Kid’s Clinic” helped my body a lot!
~Kirin, age 10

What Do Parents Say?
There continues to be vast improvements in the overall health of my 10-month-old son, Jack. The kinesiologist determined that his formula wasn’t agreeing with him. The cranial-sacral release performed by the massage therapist always results in a calmer temperament. And the energy work has eliminated his shakiness. (All problems existed from birth until eliminated by the volunteers at the Kid’s Clinic.)
~L.W.

On our first visit, we found out our daughter is allergic to sugars. She seemed to enjoy the visit and treatment did not scare her at all. Everyone here is so nice and personable! We will be back!
~Anonymous

This is something, as a society, that we cannot afford to be without. Our children need this kind of care, but parents need this type of clinic so that we can become educated about it also.
~Paula

I like the wide array of alternative holistic services available to help treat the young patients. It is done in a very loving and caring environment. You can feel the positive energy flow when you enter the clinic. You can see and feel a positive difference in the children when they come out of the different appointments. My own kids do much better, and we can see positive changes after their sessions.
~Randy

The way the different healing methods work together is wonderful. They complement each other to heal all of the children at all levels. Our children are more relaxed and less stressed. The healing has really helped them.
~Rhea
