It's All in the Name

The history of numbers is as old
as the recorded history of man.

Did you know that every letter in the alphabet has a numerical value from one to nine? Did you know that your name has a number? Do you wonder why you or one of your children or even your business have challenges? It may be the name!

You cannot change the name on your birth certificate, but you can change your business name and prospective baby's name to help them have fewer challenges. Each person is unique, and most people want their business to be unique. Names and the numbers of the name hold many secrets.

The history of numbers is as old as the recorded history of man. Pythagoras, the "Father of Mathematics," propounded the theory that nothing in the universe exists without numbers. The study of numerology is a study of numbers going back to the ancient books of wisdom.

The solar system planets move in perfect mathematical rhythmic precision, and numerology is an offshoot of planetary movement. One could not exist without the other. An advanced Astro-Numerologist can tell how, when and where. But the why is also important -- and here is where numerology comes in. Numerology provides insight into why we are living this particular life, along with what lessons and how to deal with them by overcoming negatives and exchanging them for positives.

The Expression Number is the sum total of the letters in the name given at birth that appears on the birth certificate. "Expression" is exactly what it means. It broadcasts itself to others. It is the sum total of what one has to work with in life, all the positive and challenging factors that make up one's personality. The Expression number should always be taken into consideration as to the type of work one will engage in. For example, someone with an Expression Number of "5" could never work happily in a factory doing the same thing hour after hour, day after day. A "5" needs freedom and constant change.

A more definitive study of the name is what I call the Inclusion Chart. This reveals the knowledge and sum total of experience of all past lives and what one came to this earth (this lifetime) with. It gives a key of what we are and what will be expected from us during this time on earth. The Inclusion may be the most important numbers study there is!

An Inclusion chart looks very much like a tic-tac-toe board. Each square is numbered 1 through 9 beginning with the top left square being 1 and proceeding across the top row, down to row two, beginning with 4, and the bottom row starting with 7. Each letter in the birth name is placed in the numbered box that corresponds with its numerical value.

A properly balanced chart will have letters in every box. Absence of letters usually indicates karmic responsibility. Overabundance of letters usually indicates imbalance in the personality. The ideal proportion will show one-fourth of the letters in each of the "1," "5," and "9" value boxes, and at least one letter in each of the other boxes.

Here is a brief description of the meaning of the numbers:

Number One (A, J, S): the ability to rely upon one's self and resources; the ability to originate, create, and be aggressive. The Ego Number.

Number Two (B, K, T): the ability to work with others, to cooperate. The Subservient Number.

Number Three (C, L, U): the ability for self-expression; the ability to be social and creative. The Self-Expression or Social Number.

Number Four (D, M, V): the ability to work and apply one's self to details. The Work Number.

Number Five (E, N, W): the number of change and freedom. The Change and/or Freedom Number.

Number Six (F, O, X): the ability to accept responsibility, to adjust to situations, especially domestic. The Number of Adjustment.

Number Seven (G, P, Y): the number of God, knowledge, understanding, compassion, keen mind with facts. The Number of Wisdom.

Number Eight (H, Q, Z): the ability to handle material aspects and their true value. The Number of Money or Material Aspects.

Number Nine (I, R): the ability to care for humanity with compassion. The Number of Humanity.

Any out-of-proportion grouping of numbers indicates areas of one's life where special attention needs to be given. Opportunities to learn lessons in those areas usually come for the individual.

Knowledge is wisdom. In-depth study of the Inclusion Chart shows one their weaknesses and strengths and how one will react in any aspect of life: love, marriage, home, family, business, job, travel. Understanding and using this knowledge can produce real personal growth!

Maybe you would like to be more careful now in choosing names. Remember -- it's all in the name!

The Names We Choose
Why Bob hates to be called Robert but Suzanna will never be Sue

by Kaela Koch

What is it about a name that is so powerful?

Every family includes a collection of names. There are personal names and family names. Names that are passed down, invented fresh, or combined in new ways make their way onto certificates and into our hearts and memories. At our birth, the people who welcome us give us a name that will both identify us as an individual and label us as a part of a particular clan or family unit.

In our society, it is often customary for a new child to receive the paternal family name (although hyphenated last names are becoming increasingly common) as well as both a first and middle name that are more personally derived. This means parents of a new baby have a lot to think about. There are usually at least two names to pick and endless choices to pick from. Maybe there is a relative or family friend to be honored, a favorite flower or place name; maybe a certain name just sounds good or "feels" right to the parents.

Due to these many considerations, deciding what to name a child is often not easy. And, once the choice is made, the question of whether the child will naturally "grow into" the given name, or hate it from the get go, is a question that only time can answer. Although we don't choose the name we are given, we may find that we instinctively or intuitively know that it does or does not suit us. We may use a nickname or a middle name; we may even feel compelled to change our name altogether - but why? What is it about a name that is so powerful?

The truth is that a name is more than an identification tag. A name is a pattern of sounds with particular energy associations. That energy - which can be understood as the ways that particular sounds make us feel when we hear them - is what gives a name its power.

This is why parents spend so much time and energy agonizing over what to name their children. It is why some of us feel blessed to have a name that "fits" our personality so well, while others of us feel cursed, like our name misrepresents us to others. The more we understand what our name says about us, the better off we are. We are empowered by knowledge.

Let's look at the examples introduced in the title. While Bob is Robert on his birth certificate, it has never "felt" right to him. In a simple numerical analysis (wherein the number values for letters in the name are summed and reduced), we find that Robert is a six while Bob is a one. The name Robert carries associations of balance and harmony, which are fine attributes - but not necessarily reflective of Bob's vision of himself. Rather, he sees himself as someone who is comfortable out on the edge and who gets bored with the daily grind. He loves his work as a commercial fisherman and is proud of the income he provides for his family. Although he does relish inner harmony, it is the action-oriented associations of the number one that make Bob a Bob and not a Robert.

Looking next at Suzanna, we might use a Kabbalistic approach. In this analysis, we would break the sounds of the name into Hebrew letters to be analyzed according to the relationships in the tree of life (a pattern of intriguing relationships beyond the scope of this article). The name Suzanna is comprised of several sounds. Among them are the Samech of being supportive and the Vau of making choices. When Suzanna becomes Sue, she cuts out the powerful connections to a more intuitive side that lends wisdom to her choices and gives her an aggressive edge. As Suzanna, she feels stronger than she does as Sue.

In each of these examples, the difference between a long version and an abbreviated version can make a tremendous impact on how well that name "fits." And this is just the beginning!

It is important to note that any name will have different interpretations, depending on which method is used. For example, there are many varieties of numerical analysis, several Runic systems, as well as a complicated but compelling interpretation that is gleaned through an understanding of the tree of life and the Hebrew alphabet as depicted by Kabbalists. Also important to remember is that no two Sues and no two Bobs are ever alike. The same name may indicate the same basic energy associations, but within any aspect there is a continuum, and manifestations will vary enormously. Indeed, while many of us may share a name that is fairly common, none of us are precisely like any other. We all manifest our gifts and deal with our hindrances in ways that define us as individuals as clearly as any sound ever could.

Whether you want to learn about one of the many ancient systems used in name analysis, or just want to know a little more about your name, there are many resources available, including the following:

BOOKS:
The Hidden Truth of Your Name (Ballantine, 1999) expresses the work of linguists and historians in the nomenology project. It describes the basics behind simple numeric, runic and kabbalistic approach based analyses, and covers many popular names. Though it doesn't include as many names as some other books, the information it does supply is valid and well presented. I recommend it above all others.
The Very Best Baby Name Book in the Whole Wide World, by Bruce Lanskey (Simon & Schuster, 1996) is the newest from an author with prior success in baby name books. The text provides information on the origins and popular meanings of over 30,000 names. The information is interesting, but doesn't necessarily run very deep.

WEB SITES:
http://www.kabalarians.com
This site is quite good. It offers a free brief analysis of a first name as well as a full analysis at cost. The free analyses are a good place to start a more introspective journey into the meaning of a name.
http://www.nameanalysis.com
This site provides a quick list of historical references and applications relevant to popular culture, though does not get into the deeper meanings of names.

So, how does a parent choose wisely? How can we ever be sure of which name will best fit a personality that has yet to develop? The truth is, we can't. We can never be sure of what our children will choose, nor if they will appreciate what we give them. However, we can do our best to make an informed decision. By learning what types of energy are related to given sounds, we can not only choose new baby names more effectively, but we can also understand why our sister who was always Kathy when we were kids is now only Kat or Kathleen. We can learn things about our self that we may not have recognized before.

Through a deeper understanding of name analysis, we can utilize the ancient systems of interpretation as a way of triggering the kind of intuitive thought that leads to a better use of resources. Simply changing a nickname back to a full given name, or adopting a more informal version of a name, can provide the change in expectations or perceptions that is needed. In this sense, parents should try not to take offense when their darling Cynthia Josephine wants to be called Jo. After all, choice implies critical thought. Besides, she can always change it back.

Playing the Numbers Game

Numerology is a profound and fascinating science.

Who am I? Why am I here? What is my Purpose?
If we do not know who we are, we will most likely become what the people in our lives (parents, friends, mates, work associates) want or need us to be. This was me for a long period of my life! My parents thanked me for never giving them any worry, and said I had "always been everything they wanted me to be." I took that as a major compliment, until the day I heard Sammy Davis' song, "I've Got to be Me," and suddenly I realized, I was not me.

This realization prompted my search for the real me. It was through in-depth studies of Astrology and Numerology that I finally knew who I was, why I was here, and what I was supposed to be doing in this lifetime. What did I find? I am a "9/5" – an often crazy, fun-loving, humanitarian!

You are unique! There will never be another YOU! A natal horoscope is not repeated for 25,000 years, because the planets all move at different speeds around our Sun. It is highly unlikely that two people would ever be born on the same date, in the same place, and be given the identically spelled name. An Astrologer needs your date, time, and place of birth. A Numerologist needs only your birth certificate full name and birth date to tell who you are, what you have to work with and much, much more.

Why Am I Here?

A person's Life Path or Destiny Number, which is the sum total of your birth date numbers, answers this question. Within the number is the knowledge of what life is all about, what lessons you have to learn and conquer, and what karma you want to complete. The correct way to add your birth date numbers is in a column, and then add and reduce the total to a single digit. For example:

Month (March) 3
Day 2
Year 1976
TOTAL 1981, which equals (1 + 9 + 8 + 1) 19, which equals (1+9) 10, which equals (1+0) 1 Life Path
OR
Month (December) 12
Day 29
Year 1970
TOTAL 2011, which equals 2*+11, which (2* plus 1+1=2), which equals 22 Life Path

*Note that when the total is over 2000, the 2 is kept separate. Add the other numbers together and then add the 2. Many persons born in the late 20th Century and the 21st Century will have Master Number Life Paths (11, 22, 33, etc.), which are never reduced to a single digit.

Numbers have positive and negative possibilities as well as a Keyword (shown in italics below). An enlightened soul will try to fulfill all the positives of the Path.

Life Path Numbers

One: Attainment. Positive: You are the 'starters.' Action, progress, self-confidence, pride are important. Negative: You must learn to make decisions, use your personal resources, be original, and not ego-oriented.

Two: Association. Positive: This is a path of cooperation, following instructions, gentleness, peace, companionship. Negative: You need to learn subservience and to overcome shyness and over-sensitivity.

Three: Pleasant. Positive: You are social, outgoing, giving and creative. If it is not enjoyable, you will not do it. Negative: You must learn to give freely of yourself and not be jealous.

Four: Limitation. Positive: You are organized, devoted, responsible, trustworthy and loyal, especially to your work. Negative: You need to learn to do detail work, pour the foundation, and overcome unjust hatred.

Five: Freedom. Positive: This is a life of freedom, variety, curiosity, adventure, detachment and progress. Negative: You must not misuse freedom or overindulgence in sensual pleasures; learn to accept change.

Six: Responsibility. Positive: This is a path of quick assent to power and greatness, making adjustments, settling disputes, making decisions. (President Bush is a 6.) Negative: You must learn to adjust to circumstances without always looking for perfection. You need to be willing to serve home, family and country without tyranny.

Seven: Perfection. Positive: This is the path of the loner, the philosopher, the deep thinker who seeks peace, trust, spirituality and wisdom. Negative: Aloofness, faithlessness and humiliation must be overcome. You must learn to be willing to take on problems and troubles of others.

Eight: Material Matters. Positive: This is the path of power, authority, material and financial gains, courage, executive ability. Negative: You must learn to cultivate good moral business ethics and control the need for power, money and intolerance.

Nine: Encompassing. Positive: This is all-encompassing number. You have a worldwide outlook and love traveling. You are understanding, intuitive, willing to sacrifice, and may be a teacher of some sort. Negative: You often have trouble controlling your emotions and may at times be fickle, immoral and prone to daydreaming.

Eleven: Inspiration. Positive: This master number is the number of the God-force. You are an old soul with super intelligence and intuition. You are selective of friends. Negative: You must not use your intelligence and intuition for selfish material ends. Sometimes the Eleven finds this path too hard and lives on the Two path of subservience instead.

Twenty Two: Builder. Positive: This master number is the ultimate number. You have super intelligence with a universal outlook that finds you involved in immense projects to benefit humanity. You are the master builder or master teacher. Negative: If you find the 22 too demanding, you may resort to the 4 Life Path of mundane hard work. You must not lose your ideals or mix in black arts. The 22 can be famous or infamous.

Numerology is a profound and fascinating science. There are many more numbers that help you understand yourself. For example, the Expression Number (derived from the total value of the letters in your birth name) is the sum total of what you have to work with in this lifetime. It contains all the positives and negatives of your individuality and should always be considered when deciding what kind of work you will do. Numbers are also used in forecasting the future.

I encourage you to play with your numbers. Two people with the same Life Path and/or Expression Number are often pulled together like magnets. Get out your calculator. Find your numbers and the numbers of your mates, children, friends, parents, boss, or whomever. You may be amazed at what the numbers reveal!
