EFT for Animals and Their Humans

by Jude Whitebear

EFT is useful in clearing and balancing almost any problem...

EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique, is a type of Meridian Energy Therapy (MET), which was originally created for use with people by Gary Craig (see his web site at www.emofree.com for more).

METs, also sometimes called Energy Psychology, involve tapping gently with the fingertips on meridian (acupuncture/acupressure) points on the body. This gentle tapping clears blockages in the energy system as it re-energizes us by sending pulsing waves of energy through the body's system of meridians.

In EFT, the power of intention is added to the tapping routine on 13 different points by making a "set up" statement that focuses on the issue you want to shift or heal. (For example, "Even though Bunkie is extremely shy, I totally and completely love and accept him.") Of the considerable number of METs developed by various Energy Psychology practitioners, EFT is the simplest and easiest to use for the layperson.

Benefits
EFT is useful in clearing and balancing almost any problem, including training and house-training issues, health challenges, personality or temperament problems, fears and phobias, aggression, jealousy, issues relating to other animals, past traumas (especially helpful for rescued animals), and any discomfort that our companion animals have to endure.

Easy to Use
Tapping the 13 meridian points on your own body gives you the added benefit of energizing and balancing your immune and energy systems as you work on others, whether human or animal. Whether you tap to clear your own issues or the issues of another, the tapping protocol is basically the same. That is, you follow the same protocol you do for yourself when working on others, though you will act as a proxy for a person or animal that is not present.

By doing proxy tapping on yourself, the subject animal need not be touched at all, and need not even be in the room with you. Thus you may easily work with wild animals and pets such as birds, reptiles or fish, who would rather not be tapped upon.

A woman in Denmark contacted me about her dog who was terribly afraid of loud noises and would hide under the bed trembling whenever there were fireworks, which is frequent in Copenhagen. After just one session using primarily EFT, this dog's fears evaporated completely!

We can also improve relationships with our animals, including our emotions about them, by using this simple and elegant protocol.

Years ago I had an aquarium with tropical fish and water newts. One day the two newts escaped the tank. Though I looked everywhere, they were nowhere to be found. A few days later I found their little bodies, completely dried up. I was devastated by guilt. Every time I recalled the situation, the guilt seemed more overwhelming, so I decided to try a few rounds of EFT. I spent 15 minutes tapping myself, and was relieved to find that the overwhelming guilt was gone - its negative charge completely cleared. The memory was still there, of course, but the debilitating negativity of that great guilt had been eliminated - and so simply and easily!

The complete EFT protocol for animals, including a diagram, can be found online (see Resources below). I encourage everyone to learn this highly beneficial technique. Something this simple and easy to learn can benefit us and our beloved companions so much that it is well worth the practice and effort. Soon you will remember the points and not need notes, and you may find yourself tapping for all kinds of issues, out in public or at home.
