Focus on Children

by Dawn Baumann Brunke

The main focus of this summer issue is children. As a number of insightful individuals have remarked at one time or another, children are the world's greatest resource. As parents, teachers and caregivers, it is our responsibility to help our children flower into the brightest expressions of life possible.

To begin this issue, however, the conflict over aspartame continues. As a result of three articles focusing on the dangers of aspartame toxicity (March/April 1999), we have received numerous calls and letters on this subject. Three letters are included in this issue. To deepen the debate, frequent contributor J. Wayne Erickson looks at the results of aspartame, MSG and Ritalin in the life of one youngster. Another hot topic is vaccines/immunizations, especially for those children who are entering school. Many parents mistakenly believe they are required to have their children vaccinated in order to attend school. This is not so. Dr. Robert Wheeler has addressed this topic before (Jan/Feb 1999) and once again lends his expertise on this controversial issue, as does former social worker Jackie Rahm. Also included is information from the National Vaccine Information Center, a national, non-profit, educational organization. Alaska Wellness encourages parents to read all types of information concerning vaccines/immunizations in order to make an enlightened decision for your child and family. This issue also looks at helping to keep kids healthy during a parental divorce and the value of yoga for special needs children. Confronting the dark side of children and violence, counselor and Kung Fu Master Bruce Bibee offers insight on how we might begin to evolve as a society by offering more meaningful transitions from the turbulence of teenage years into responsible adulthood. Finally, no issue on children could be complete without honoring birth ~ the grand entrance of all of us onto the stage. Rosemary Cody comments on the benefits of acupuncture in promoting healthy birth for both mother and child, and Massage Therapist Karen Gilley presents information on the importance of touch following this momentous occasion.
