Healing Between Worlds

by Michele Aitken

It's been awhile since I've been inspired to write, but life always has a tendency to push us in the direction we need to follow. I've had some wonderful opportunities in healing myself, my family and others. This helps me in my education. I'm reminded of the importance of the phrase "Healer heal thyself," and for that I am always grateful.

Over a year ago, I wrote an article about my youngest daughter, CarlyRose. CarlyRose has a rare genetic disorder. The article was called "My Perfect Rose" (Alaska Wellness, Nov/Dec 1999). CarlyRose is almost five now and is still perfect! Her healing continually surprises doctors. I am still a strong advocate of holistic medicine and do my part to close the void between western and holistic healing. I don't think one will or should conquer the other. My vision is one of growing communication and sharing - the best of both worlds.

Lately, I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with the medical system on my own project, which I hope will help in further closing this gap. Through The Arc, I now work with children with disabilities. I go into their homes and do massage and yoga for children with special needs. I have been greeted with open arms, and everyone is supporting me to make this happen. We are joining together to bring healing to a whole new level.

It's exciting to pioneer into new territory! I have witnessed natural healing mixed with love and tenderness "infect" entire families and communities. Everyone heals from an individual child's experience! Instead of invading or painful procedures, there is love, touch, soothing music and breathing.

We started with a pilot program of one child. We have documented evidence of improvement, and now it is possible for other children to have this wonderful therapy as well. It has taken many with the same intent to begin this path - this shift in healing consciousness. To those who have supported me, I am very grateful.

As we go about our dreams, we need to remember that one thought, or one action, can bridge worlds. I know that with continued effort we will all work together for the healing of the human body and the soul. This is true healing.
