The world condition can be confusing, even terrifying these days. Turning on the TV and seeing “Brink of War” flash across the screen can definitely rain on your parade. By the time this article is in print, we could already be in a world war - if the prayers for peace don’t stop it. How do you make future plans if we are having a war? Since 9/11/2002, the world has been going through many unpleasant feelings and some deep soul searching. Some ask, when is war an ethical thing? Do we have the right to destroy the ecosystem for future generations? If you are practicing the Ten Commandments (number six says, “Thou shalt not kill”), you have to decide if it is okay for mass murder to free suppressed people or to keep ourselves safe. If you believe in group karma, it’s terrifying to think we will all have to live if our President Bush starts World War III. Of course, there is always the fundamentalist justification: Our way is God’s way. It’s okay to get rid of the non-believers. Right? Or perhaps you are wondering if these are really the “last days.” For generations, we have been waiting for the return of Jesus. I hope he hurries. Considering just how much progress humanity has made toward our love of fellow man in the last few thousand years can be depressing. God told us in the Holy writings of the world how to live. But we don’t do it. There is corruption everywhere, even in the churches. People preaching, but not practicing. Even practicing has become more difficult as our beliefs are challenged. What if it’s too late for practice and the world is really going to end because of man’s inhumanity to man? It wasn’t very long ago that good Christians thought it was okay to kill black people because they weren’t “really people.” On it goes. Social paradigms are shifting radically. Our lives and businesses are being affected even though many of us are doing our best to ignore it. One day, I flashed on the idea that this must be what the world felt before World War II. That’s a very scary thought! On the positive side, the history books will probably call this a Spiritual Revolution. You could even say it is a great time to be alive. We are making history. All over the world, more people are showing up at church these days – returning to family religions and banning together. Prayer vigils and Internet peace campaigns abound. Never before has the cry “One world, One people!” been so strong. We may all make it back to God and the world is saved. All those worries for nothing! So, who do we listen to in the midst of a panic attack? How do we put things together and handle the fear? From intense compassion and terror to the feeling that God has a plan, it is hard to know all of the feelings these things are stirring within. Is it any wonder that we can become very confused these days? I’ve tried tuning out the TV and not paying attention to the hype, but I started feeling the same basic fears on a cellular level – the mass fear. It sometimes wakes me up in the middle of the night. I really don’t think we can get away from it, for there are too many of us on the planet and we are all connected. When I realized this, I knew I needed a new plan. So here it is – so simple that it’s a wonder I forgot: listen to your Inner Wisdom. Trust it. It’s never wrong. I mean really listen. It gets easier to trust once you have heard it a few times. God knows what is going to happen and what is best for us, not only in our own lives, but in the world too. Inner Wisdom or “still small voice” will direct you and tell you what you need to know and what you need to do. The “still small voice” always tells you how to be safe and happy. Inner Wisdom is not your intuition. Psychic gifts have nothing to do with it. It won’t tell you what is good for others and it won’t tell you the future. Everyone has Inner Wisdom and anyone can listen to it; you don’t have to be religious or meditate. Inner Wisdom is very quiet, though, and the world is very loud. So you may have to listen often and very carefully. Become as still as that still small voice within yourself. It also doesn’t talk a lot. There will be very few words. As my 9-year-old son says, “God is the warm tingly feeling I get when I pray.” I was so happy to remember that God is a mystery, so much bigger than we are and that I truly love God, no matter my religion. That inner connection is so much more powerful than anything that is happening in the world around us. If everyone listened to Inner Wisdom moment by moment, what a beautiful world it would be!
